Google Home Max Chalk

This is good if you don’t feel like going through the trouble of EQing your music yourself, but not so good if you do because you won’t have that level of control. All you get is the basic bass and treble sliders in the Google home app. It can be placed vertically or horizontally, while it supports stereo configuration if you have a pair. There is an AUX jack to plug in other devices and six far-field microphones for hotword detection. The Google Home Max suffers from no perceivable temporal artifacts . Spectral artifacts, on the other hand, can appear at quiet, nominal, and maximum listening levels .

It helps extend the overall strength, capability, and reach of your home network. With Google Home, easily create helpful automations with your devices. Schedule your cameras to turn on and your doors to automatically lock at sunset.

The Google has better controls and has an excellent-performing Google Assistant built-in. However, the Sonos can produce more low-bass and has a better-balanced sound profile, which makes it better suited for music. You can manually boost or cut the Max’s bass and treble levels plus or minus 6dB, but Google says the Home Max’s audio performance will automatically improve over time. The speaker uses its onboard microphones to evaluate the environment it’s playing in and will tune itself accordingly. Its balanced mid-range can reproduce vocals and lead instruments clearly, but its underemphasized treble can make audio dull.

The AirPods Max is one of the few products that doesn't have too many rumors attached to it. The biggest indicator here that a refresh is imminent is that lower-cost products in the AirPods lineup have passed the premium, high-end headphones in some technical abilities. Based on increased rumors and information stemming from the supply chain, it would seem that there are at least a few more exciting products Apple has in store for release sometime in 2023. A new HomePod and XR headset may be among the new products released by Apple in 2023. The Home Max, and Mini, launched in 2017 as the first expansion of Google’s smart speaker lineup.

To connect a smart home device, open up the Google Home app and follow the instructions. Once you’ve connected the device, you can use voice commands to control it. As far as smart speakers go, the top competitor for the Google Home Max right now is JBL's Link system, especially the Link 500 ($399.95), which we are in the process of reviewing. The Link system has four different speaker options, all with Google Assistant.

The Google Home Max is a powerful, voice-activated speaker designed to provide superior sound quality for your TV. It has a full range of features, including the ability to stream music from online services, control your smart home devices, and access the Google Assistant. With its large size and high-end audio components, it can provide an immersive sound experience that rivals that of a home theater system. Using Google Home Max is a great way to enjoy your favorite music, ask questions, and control compatible smart home devices. The Google Home Max is a voice-activated speaker that works with the Google Assistant to provide hands-free control of your compatible devices.

What does a Google Home Max do

Also, its voice assistant does a better job understanding you when you're in a noisy environment. However, the Google has a more neutral sound profile out-of-the-box. There’s currently no way to have the Google Home Max act as a wirelesssound bar for your TV. Google told Digital Trends it’s a highly requested feature that the company is looking into, but it will take time to overcome some technical challenges such as syncing the audio and video. You could, however, connect a TV’s analog audio outputs to the Max’s 3.5 mm analog audio input with an adapter cable, though. Set up of the Max is pretty straightforward — all you need to do is plug in the device, download the Google Home app if you haven’t already, and follow the setup instructions from there.

If you crave a powerful speaker with massive amounts of bass and rock-solid overall sound, the Google Max is what you’re looking for. We may have been balking at that $400 price tag from afar, but every sent of that sum is paid back with what the speaker can do to rock a party. Card-carrying audiophiles will skip a speaker like the Max and invest in a real stereo system, which will deliver better dynamics and overall quality.

Google Home Max Review

Also, it has a mediocre soundstage, and there's compression when you play it at max volume. Its latency with Android and iOS devices may be too high for watching videos, but fortunately, it performs better over a Google Chromecast connection. The Google Max is a speaker first, with Google Assistant tossed in for added smarts and connectivity.

Google provides a generous 6.5-foot power cable with a diminutive two-prong plug at the end (death to wall warts!), which makes the speaker easy to place. Two of the Max’s far-field microphones are on the left side, so you wouldn’t want that to become the bottom. The Google Home Max is the best-sounding smart speaker on the market, but there are plenty of “dumb” powered speakers that sound better. While it's a stereo sound when placed horizontally, the directivity is quite poor, resulting in a soundstage that feels a bit more closed-off. The speaker automatically becomes mono whenever placed vertically, but we don't test for this.

Since it's a 360-degree speaker, it also has an outstanding soundstage. Both speakers have been discontinued and may be difficult to find in new condition. You can also use the Google Assistant to control compatible smart home devices such as lights, thermostats, locks, and more. So the Home Max looks good and works well, but how does it sound?

You can also control compatible devices such as thermostats, security systems and lights using voice commands. So let's say the built-in Google Assistant functionality is worth about $50 of the $400 price tag—that would mean the Home Max should sound as good as a $350 speaker, right? Compared with some of our favorite standard wireless speakers in this price range, like the Klipsch The Three and the JBL Boombox, the Home Max is most definitely a competitor.

Comparison: New 10.9-inch iPad vs. iPad Air

The biggest issue with the Max's sound was its potentially piercing midrange. Unfortunately I couldn't adjust it out; turning treble down all the way didn't help much. If you like Dick Dale or bluegrass violin solos, maybe you should consider a different speaker.

Unfortunately, you can’t say “Yo Google” just yet, but “Okay Google” or “Hey Google” work just fine. At soft and quiet volumes, the tonal balance remains impressively consistent, as do all the dynamics sub-attributes . This makes the Google Home Max a relevant speaker for listening to music and podcasts, and even for watching videos at soft volumes.

Distortion and other artifacts can occur both because of sound processing and because of the quality of the speakers. At nominal volume, the frequency ranges are well balanced, with particularly consistent midrange frequencies . That said, high-end is slightly lacking, contrary to the Big Four company’s promise. The bass response, moderately affected by a lack of low-end extension and a few resonances, remains fairly good overall. As with every Echo except the Echo Plus , you’ll need a smart home hub in addition to the Google Home Max to control most smart home devices (i.e., anything that doesn’t operate over Wi-Fi).

However, if you're looking for a wired speaker that supports Apple AirPlay, consider the Sonos Five or the Sonos One Gen 2. Google didn’t provide an official reason for discontinuing the product. Several sources on technology updates shred that Google wouldn’t be manufacturing the device anymore but would continue to support existing users. Despite the self-tuning capabilities of the Google speaker, I found that I needed to tweak it a little, especially when sitting on table in free space. For most material, adjusting the Max's bass by +3db in the Google Home app's settings helped propel rock and dance songs and reduce the brightness a tad.

Protect your purchase

The Google Home Max builds the convenience of Google Assistant into a plus-size speaker that can fill a room with excellent sound. As of now, these apps are limited and there is no way to browse an app store like you would on a phone or tablet. However, it’s likely that Google will add more apps and features in the future as they continue to develop their device and platform.

Most of the major streaming services, be it YouTube Music, YouTube, Netflix, Spotify, etc., have built-in functionality that will cause the button to pop up automatically in the app. But what makes the Home Max a smart speaker is that you can speak to it. If you don’t feel like browsing through your phone to find that new Childish Gambino song, you can just ask the Home Max to play Feels Like Summer thanks to tiny built-in microphones.

Listening tests

Starting this fall, you’ll be able to find Matter-enabled smart lighting, plugs, locks, sensors, thermostats, shades and blinds, Wi-Fi routers, and more. Now you can view live video from your Nest cameras and doorbell, right from the home screen in your Google Home app.

This is a single-box speaker, and subject to all the compromises that type of form factor introduces. If you prioritize performance and are trying to decide between a pair of Maxes and a stereo system, the choice is easy -- get a stereo system. The Max's response to voice commands was excellent, and it did a better job deciphering my Australian accent than the Sonos One with Alexa. I found I could say "Hey Google" in a normal voice from 6 feet away and the speaker would hear it most of the time.

The redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models that Apple launched in 2021 will not be refreshed this year. Speaking of videos, since the latency induced by both Google Cast and Bluetooth connections is quite significant, the auxiliary input at the back of the device is highly welcome. Further, the Smart Sound technology does, as promised, allow the speaker to adapt efficiently to its environment. Therefore, it is capable of dealing with complex acoustics, such as in bathrooms. There’s a touch-sensitive volume slider on the top of the speaker (the right-hand side when vertically oriented), along with touch-sensitive play/pause. There are no physical controls for track forward/track back, but you can, of course, accomplish that with voice commands. The speaker is remarkably adept at hearing the “Hey Google” wake word even when it’s playing music loudly.

The Google Home Max speaker is Bluetooth-compatible and can be connected to two devices at the same time. Unfortunately, its Bluetooth latency is a bit too high to listen to videos, although some apps may compensate for this, so your experience may vary. Even if the sound quality is great, you’ll still want to use your preferred music service. Google thankfully has a wide-array of support including Spotify, Google Play Music, YouTube Music, Pandora, TuneIn, and iHeart Radio. Everything else that the Max does in some way related to sound quality, and this includes the Smart Sound feature. Smart Sound is a self-calibration routine using the onboard microphones, which lets the speaker adjust the sound automatically according to its position in the room.

Again, the louder you pump the volume, the thinner the bass gets, but at fairly high listening levels, the bass depth is still impressive. The vocals are delivered with solid clarity and without much added sibilance. Bill Callahan's "Drover," a track with less deep bass in the mix, gives us a better sense of the Home Max's overall sound signature.

It weighs 11.7 pounds, and it’s wrapped in “acoustically transparent” fabric like that on the Mini. It comes in black or white and looks elegant and sleek, but we don’t think it will blend seamlessly into your home. Unlike it’s little sisters, the Google Home and Home Mini, this device is heavy and bulky. You’ll want to make sure that it’s in a secure place in your home, as it might not survive an accidental fall. Is the Google Home Max the speaker that will tempt audiophiles away from their two-channel systems?

At the bottom of the back panel, there's a connection for the included power cable, a USB-C port , and a 3.5mm jack for wired audio input. You can't attach external storage or an audio source to the USB-C port. No the Google Home Max isn’t spying on you, as in, it isn’t recording your conversations and delivering them to some foreign government. There are some privacy issues that you should be aware of before you put this thing in your bedroom. For one, some Google Home recordings in the past were leaked thanks to contractors that had access to the recordings.

LED Headlamps COAST Products

These are awesome headlamps, especially for the price. I ran a 199-mile team relay in August and I was in charge of recommending headlamps for the team for running at night. I tested 7 different headlamps, but these Coast headlamps are better and cheaper than anything I tested, including two $40 headlamps.

They are very bright with a low, medium, and high mode. The beam is a full flood that can be twisted down to a spot. It has a red and green LED on each side that put out barely enough light to walk at night once your eyes adjust. The red mode is good for walking around the house at night without turning on the lights and waking everyone up. It has a claimed 435 lumens, but I disregard lumens since they can be so wildly exaggerated. At what distance does the light put out enough illumination to tell the difference between a dog and a deer?

Lowes had 210 lumen 3 color Lux-Pro headlamps for $10ea a few days ago. Home Depot also had a display for Copper Fit socks. I'm leery of the copper doing anything beneficial, but they were 3 pairs for $9.95 so I bought them. They are surprisingly warm, especially for a no-show anklet sock. I'm a runner so I wear these no-show socks in the winter and my feet often get cold. Maybe there is something to this "copper" thing.

Delivery times may vary, especially during peak periods. Cleared payment cleared payment - opens in a new window or tab. Will usually ship within 3 business days of receiving cleared payment. Home Depot has a 2-pack of Coast FL74 tri-color headlamps for $19.95.

My best LED flashlight is good for about 140 yards. The Coast in spot beam is good for about 100 yards. My other headlamps are in the 50 to 70-yard range. Keep your hands free while you get the job done—whether it’s working in the crawlspace or preparing for a fishing trip before dawn. COAST LED headlamps to deliver world-class optical technology in a variety of formats, with many options for beam shaping, power source, and light control. On each additional eligible item you buy from years-of-history.
